I came across this article today, from Information Week, SIP Trunking Gets Serious At Enterprise Connect, and I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. SIP is a communications standard that allows VOIP initiated voice and video calls to be transmitted over networks.
I manage a network for my father's small business, George Burns Photography. Last year, I implemented an SIP phone network to connect our home offices to each other, and to allow us to communicate better within the organization. If you have a couple hours to spare and a couple hundred bucks, it's an absolute no brainer. There are several open source platforms that you can take advantage of, I just happened to use an Asterisk variant, PBX in a Flash. If you've never done it before, give it a whirl. Take an unused PC and turn it into an Asterisk server, then shoot on over to eBay or VOIP Supply and grab a couple phones. Not only does it make smart business sense - it's damn cool.
